Description

'Ulalume' is a ballad written by Edgar Allan Poe. It takes place on a lonesome night in October in the region of Weir, by the lake of Auber. The narrator has a serious talk with his own soul (symbolized in my illustration through the butterfly) and returns unconciously to the grave of his lost love.

The open grave is a hint to the beautiful 'Berenice' illustration of Harry Clarke.

I'm starting with the positive aspects and there are lots of it in this drawing! The subject you chose is a unique one, ''Ulalume'' is not the most known of Poes works and certainly not easy to understand too. You conveyed the atmosphere of the poem so well. Your drawing expresses a tension between melancholy and despair you can experience when reading Poe's ballad as well.

Your technique is advanced and you did an amazing job with the different textures. The background is done particular well and the pose of the girl fits the mood and theme of your illustration. The shading is simply gorgeous! I like the contrast between her fair and smooth skin and the rough textures of the landscape.

The only small critique I have is the hair, I think you could do it in a more detailed manner. Additionally, I think the drawing would have worked better if you had shown us a little bit more of her face, though it works this way too! You can tell from her eyes that she is sad.

All in all you did an amazing job on this and I hope you keep up your good work!
